First settled in 1856, Estherville was
incorporated as a city in 1881. The City is
named after Esther
Ridley, wife of Estherville’s founder Robert
Ridley. In the 1870’s people began
immigrating to the area from Scandinavian
countries, Germany and Ireland, and made up
the populace of the area. Estherville is
the county seat of Emmet County, which is
named after Irish leader Robert Emmet. A
historical event of great significance
happened on May 10, 1879, when a meteor fell
north of Estherville that had a total weight
of 774 pounds. Parts of it are on display
in museums around the world.
Today, Estherville allows you to rest in a
peaceful relaxing environment, while still
experiencing the excitement of the Iowa
Great Lakes only a 15-minute drive away.
The City is privileged with excellent
educational opportunities, health care
facilities, neighborhoods, entertainment,
and recreational options. Approximately
7,000 people make Estherville their home.
Estherville offers visitors and citizens alike
everything from quiet walks with nature to kayaking
along the Des Moines River. |
Escape to Estherville and experience a city rich with
history, culture, nature, beauty, and fun!
